Eight Tourism Ambassadors Recognized at Highlands County Insights & Awards Luncheon

On Sept. 10, at the Highlands County Tourism Insights & Awards Program, Visit Sebring presented eight Winner’s Circle Awards to recognize individuals, teams, businesses, and organizations that exceeded expectations and served as tourism ambassadors by going above and beyond their typical, everyday duties. These awards recognize and celebrate the dedicated tourism professionals who provide exceptional customer service and ensure our visitors create special memories with their families and friends during their time in Highlands County.

“Through their performance and actions, they created situations that resulted in happy, grateful, surprised, and delighted visitors,” said Visit Sebring’s Casey Hartt.  “They are also people who make the operation of our tourism-related businesses better, faster, friendlier, and more efficient, so that visiting our area is much more pleasing for our tourists.”

Online nominations were submitted in early 2025 to recognize outstanding performance in 2024.  A record number of nominations showcased a true testament to the spirit of hospitality that thrives here in Highlands County. Nominations were reviewed by an independent panel of judges who reside outside of Highlands County.  That panel selected the winners listed below.

Hotel Service Champion – Sergio Guareno from Inn on the Lakes

Sergio’s approach to guest service transcends the ordinary, transforming each interaction into an opportunity to make guests feel deeply welcomed and valued. From his warm greetings upon their arrival to his thoughtful recommendations for things to do in the area, Sergio consistently demonstrates extraordinary initiative and compassion.  Sergio is more than just a pillar of exceptional professional service at Inn on the Lakes; he is an inspiring example.

Attraction Service Champion – Jon Scott from Airboat Wildlife Adventures

Since 2006, Jon Scott of Airboat Wildlife Adventures has grown his side hustle into one of Florida’s top-rated attractions, earning 4.9 stars on Google and TripAdvisor. Guests travel hours for his one-of-a-kind tours, but it’s Jon’s personal connection, tireless work ethic, and commitment to giving 100% every day that make the experience truly unforgettable.
Jon’s passion for showcasing our local waterways and wildlife has created unforgettable memories for visitors.

Restaurant Service Champions – David Ailstock from 18 East Restaurant

David’s nominator wrote: “While visiting Highlands County in 2024, we visited 18 East after the kitchen was closed. The owner knew we were hungry, and with a smile on his face, he went into the kitchen and created a massive platter of amazing food for us to share. It was delicious, but what made it even better was that he did not HAVE to make us food after hours and serve it with a huge smile. He spent the rest of the evening visiting with us and sharing how much he loves his business and his community. When I think about my favorite moments of spending time in Highlands County, that evening in 18 East is at the top of the list.”

Sports Champion – Kim Largin with U.S. Fastpitch Association

Our 2025 Sports Tourism Champion is responsible for bringing 12 softball events to Highlands County’s Multi Sports Complex.  Those events generated $500,000 in economic impact and resulted in more than 2,000 hotel room night stays.   Kim’s dedication to sports tourism has elevated the Sebring area and the Highlands County Multi-Sports Complex as a prime destination for competitive sports.

Rising Star Champion – Tina Barkey from The Bagel Bar

This rising star brought authentic New York–style bagels to Avon Park with vision and creativity. From the subway-inspired décor and locally painted mural to her clever menu and family recipes, every detail reflects excellence. She supports local businesses, mentors young entrepreneurs, and draws visitors from near and far proving herself a true pioneer, dreamer, and community champion. Tina’s energy and enthusiasm have made an immediate and lasting impact.

Innovation Champion – The Sugar Express

The Sugar Express is a creative, innovative force in tourism, blending history with modern experiences. By restoring and operating a steam-powered locomotive, they offer nostalgic journeys through Central Florida with themed excursions, holiday rides, and interactive events that delight all ages. Their efforts not only attract visitors and rail enthusiasts but also boost our local economy. The Sugar Express continues to play a vital role in promoting local tourism and community growth.

Volunteer Champion – Nancy Fisk from the Historical Society of Avon Park

Nancy is described as a “serial volunteer.” As the Avon Park Historical Society President, she spends countless hours caring for the grounds, welcoming speakers and guests, and even funding refreshments and travel from her own pocket. Always full of ideas and hospitality, she works tirelessly to make Avon Park and Highlands County a better place to live, work, and play. Visitors to the Depot Museum and Chamber of Commerce often praise Nancy’s warm welcome and vast knowledge of the community.

Humanitarian Champion – Don Jose Mexican Restaurant

Since 2021, Don Jose Mexican Restaurant has supported local students by funding scholarships to make college more accessible. Originally from Mexico, the owners are passionate about giving back and host an annual Donor Dinner, providing the space, food, and a silent auction to raise funds for these educational opportunities. Through their remarkable scholarship program, Don Jose has awarded more than $70,000 to local students—a lasting investment in our community’s future.

Congratulations to our tourism champions. They all represent the best of Highlands County through dedication, creativity, and generosity, making this a destination where guests not only visit but return time and time again, while making it a better place for locals to live, work and play.  For more information about the Winner’s Circle Tourism Awards Program, go to: https://visitsebring.com/tourism-awards/.
