Sebring, FL 33872

Overview

Kick off the New Year outdoors with a guided First Day Hike at Highlands Hammock State Park on Wednesday, January 1. Meet at the Cypress Swamp Trail at 10:15 AM to join park ranger Laura McMullen for an off-the-beaten-path trek to the Historic Dam at Little Charley Bowlegs Creek.

This approximately 1.5-mile hike explores the park’s hammock, pineland, and swamp communities while highlighting its unique hydrology and history. Along the way, visitors will walk through forested wetlands and see New Deal–era structures dating back to the 1930s—plus keep an eye out for wildlife that calls the park home.

Parking is limited; guests should park in the Cypress Swamp Trail parking area along Loop Road and walk back to the Wildlife Kiosk. Participants should dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking shoes, long pants, and protective clothing. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are not permitted.

Registration is requested due to limited space. RSVP by emailing laura.mcmullen@floridadep.gov or calling the ranger station at 863-386-6094. There is no additional fee for the hike, but regular park entry fees apply.
