Learn how a couple’s philanthropy shaped early Highlands County.
John Augustus Roebling II and Margaret Shippen Roebling were influential philanthropists whose investments helped shape several communities in the early 20th century. Seeking a warm, dry climate for Margaret’s health, the Roeblings discovered Lake Placid, Florida, and began developing a home and supporting buildings near town—structures that would later form the core of Archbold Biological Station.
Join Archbold Librarian and Archivist Joe Gentili for a two-part program exploring how the Roeblings contributed to the growth of Highlands County and supported local employment during the Great Depression. Between 1927 and 1941, they provided significant resources for two major county projects, along with many smaller efforts that left a lasting imprint on the region.
The event includes a 30-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute walking tour (less than one mile) of the historic Archbold campus buildings. We will explore how and why the Roeblings came to Highlands County, the impact of their work, and how their legacy connects to the founding of Archbold.
